When I first picked this month’s book as our February book read, I thought it would be a fun and quirky Valentine’s Day story about finding true love in the after life.

Now that I’ve finished this amazing book, I realize I could have just as easily picked it for a January book club book if Hello Stranger hadn’t already filled that spot.

Reading these two books consecutively made for an excellent lead-in to a new year because they both left me with an overwhelming sense of hope, a respect for the importance of joy, and inspiration to make the next few months the best they can be.

I hope you enjoy this month’s book just as much as I did. If you want to see my full thoughts, you can read my The Love of My After Life book review here!

What is The Love of My After Life About?

“A recently deceased woman meets “the one” in the afterlife waiting room, scoring a second chance at life (and love!) if she can find him on earth before ten days are up…

If she wasn’t dead already, Delphie would be dying of embarrassment. Not only did she just die by choking on a microwaveable burger, but now she’s standing in her ‘shine like a star’ nightie in front of the hottest man she’s ever seen. And he’s smiling at her.

As they start to chat, everything else becomes background noise. That is until someone comes running out of a door, yelling something about a huge mistake, and sends the dreamy stranger back down to earth. And here Delphie was thinking her luck might be different in the afterlife.

When Delphie is offered a deal in which she can return to earth and reconnect with the mysterious man, she jumps at the opportunity to find her possible soulmate and a fresh start. But in a city of millions, Delphie is going to have to listen to her heart, learn to ask for help, and perhaps even see the magic in the life she’s leaving behind…”

The Love of My After Life Discussion Questions

I believe the best book club questions to spark a lively discussion in your group help readers make personal connections to the story.

You can read about how to write the best book club questions on your own here, but hopefully these will get you started!

    Question 1:

If you were Delphie, how would you have found and convinced Jonah to kiss you within the 10 days?

    Question 2:

How familiar with the romantic tropes celebrated in this book were you before you read it? Which romantic trope is your favorite? Which ones were part of the plot in this book?

    Question 3:

Which of the books mentioned in The Love of My After Life have you read before? Were there any titles that caught your eye?

    Question 4:

Delphie has lead a very safe life up until the book begins. By the end of the story, she has plans for more adventure. On the spectrum of her character arc, where do you think your life falls–play it safe or wild adventurer?

    Question 5:

“God, wouldn’t it be a dull old life if you never had anything to cry about?” How does this quote resonate with you? Do you agree or disagree? Why?

    Question 6:

“I knew that he had shown me how to use my body as an instrument for joy instead of fear.” What are some joyful ways you plan to use your body this year? What is holding you back?

    Question 7:

Merritt considers the need to redecorate her welcoming room to be more universally comforting. What would you recommend to her?

    Question 8:

Which was your favorite side character from the new friends (and old) that Delphie adds to her life over the course of the story? Why?

    Question 9:

“My past is what makes me, me. And all of it, good and bad, has led me here today. On a summer’s day in August, in this fancy room, about to drink a shitload of free champagne.” Think of a decision or turning point in your life that led you to this book club gathering tonight, how did you get here?

    Book Club Party Menu

I think it is so fun to plan your book club dinner menu or dessert list based on the theme of the book.

There are a few book club dinner-friendly dishes mentioned throughout the story, here are a few I’d choose if I were hosting the party:

A microwave hamburger is at the center of the event that triggers the plot into action. It would make for a hysterical main course for your book club party.

You could use my classic cheeseburger recipe to make mini hamburger sliders for a more book club-approrpriate snack.

Shape the hamburger patties into smaller slider sizes to enjoy as a book club snack. Our classic cheeseburger is juicy and seasoned to perfection.

Not only is the book set in London, home of amazing afternoon teas, but there is a very important party featured at the end of the book that has tables of sandwiches and sides.

Choose an egg salad sandwich along with one or two other options from my list of finger sandwiches and add a few of these easy party sandwich side dishes to round out the menu.

Mix and match a few of these easy sandwich recipes to set the stage for party similar to the one at the end of the book

For dessert, I recommend grabbing a birthday cake from your local bakery or baking a batch of birthday cupcakes with vanilla glaze to keep it easy. There are a couple pivotal scenes that reference birthday cake and the importance of being recognized on your special day. Add candles and light it up at your book club party.

Be sure to serve the cake with a big bottle of fizzy champagne!

    Easy Vanilla Glaze for Cupcakes
Spread this delicious vanilla glaze on a batch of vanilla cupcakes, a bundt cake, or a quick bread for a stunning finish. Just add sprinkles!
