Thank You for Listening Book Club Kit
Thank You for Listening by Julia Whelan is the official July 2024 pick for the Peanut Blossom Book Club for Recovering Readers.
One of my favorite parts about the Peanut Blossom Book Club is how open minded our members are about reading genres they wouldn’t normally turn to.
I think it makes your reading life so much more interesting and fun to switching things up now and again.
Another way to keep things fresh is to explore reading a book in a new-to-you format. This month’s book would be an amazing choice for listening to your first audiobook if you don’t normally enjoy that format.
Written by one of my favorite audiobook narrators, the author reads the story herself for the audiobook version.
I found myself laughing out loud while listening, her amazing performance breathes life into the romantic and witty banter that makes up a good portion of the story.
P.S. Just joining us? Don’t miss the full 2024 line-up for our book club picks.

What is Thank You for Listening About?
“For Sewanee Chester, being an audiobook narrator is a long way from her old dreams, but the days of being a star on film sets are long behind her. She’s found success and satisfaction from the inside of a sound booth and it allows her to care for her beloved, ailing grandmother. When she arrives in Las Vegas last-minute for a book convention, Sewanee unexpectedly spends a whirlwind night with a charming stranger.
On her return home, Sewanee discovers one of the world’s most beloved romance novelists wanted her to perform her last book—with Brock McNight, the industry’s hottest, most secretive voice. Sewanee doesn’t buy what romance novels are selling—not after her own dreams were tragically cut short—and she stopped narrating them years ago. But her admiration of the late author, and the opportunity to get her grandmother more help, makes her decision for her.
As Sewanee begins work on the book, resurrecting her old romance pseudonym, she and Brock forge a real connection, hidden behind the comfort of anonymity. Soon, she is dreaming again, but secrets are revealed, and the realities of life come crashing down around her once more.
If she can learn to risk everything for desires she has long buried, she will discover a world of intimacy and acceptance she never believed would be hers.”
Thank You for Listening Discussion Questions
I believe the best book club questions to spark a lively discussion in your group help readers make personal connections to the story.
You can read about how to write the best book club questions on your own here, but hopefully these will get you started!
Question 1:
How did you read this book? Did you enjoy the print/ebook version or the audiobook? Do you listen to audiobooks? Why or why not?
Question 2:
Thank You for Listening describes the fanbase individual audiobook narrators can develop. Do you follow certain audiobook narrators? Have you listened to any other books read by Julia Whelan? Would you after reading this book?
Question 3:
Do you believe in HEAs? (Happily Ever Afters) Do you prefer books that guarantee them or not?
Question 4:
Sewanee’s life has a distinct before/after life changing moment with her accident but she eventually reconciles that she is still the same person. Have you had a pivotal change in your own life? Do you feel like someone new now?
Question 5:
Who would you have chosen, Nick or Brock?
Question 6:
How did you feel about the email and text banter that makes up a significant portion of the book? Do you prefer typical story narration or was this a fun change of pace?
Question 7:
Who was your favorite secondary character and why? What was it about their plot line that you enjoyed?
Book Club Party Menu
I think it is so fun to plan your book club dinner menu or dessert list based on the theme of the book.
Several easy book club party snacks are mentioned throughout the story.
You could set up a buffet of easy treats similar to what the audiobook narrators enjoyed:
- Tea with lemon wedges
- Salty Pretzels
- Apple Slices
You could also serve a party menu filled with lemony accents to play off the heart-shaped lemon slice on the cover of the book:
For something more savory, you could mix taco seasoning and sour cream and serve it with raw veggies for dunking like Adaku and Sewanee enjoy at the end of the story.
My easy spicy taco dip would be an easy upgrade from that delicious dip, too:
