Parents Weekend Book Club Kit
Parents Weekend by Alex Finlay is the official August 2026 pick for the Peanut Blossom Book Club for Recovering Readers.

I picked up Parents Weekend by Alex Finlay just days before dropping my baby off at college for the first time. She looked at the thriller description and then looked back at me like I was insane.
"Mom, are you sure you should be reading this right now??"
The answer was YES. If you're going to be taking a kid off to college this year, you need all the gripping distractions from your feelings that you can get. I was so distraught, my attention just couldn't be kept by a sweet romance or a cozy story of any kind.
I needed something with a bit more . . . grit. Something that could remind me that, "It could always be worse."
So in the back to school season of August, this harrowing tale of 5 missing college students is just what fits!

What is Parents Weekend About?
In the glow of their children’s exciting first year of college at a small private school in Northern California, five families gather over dinner and cocktails for the opening festivities of Parents Weekend. As the parents stay out way past their bedtimes, their kids―five residents of Campisi Hall―never show up to dinner.
At first, everyone thinks they’re just being college students, irresponsibly forgetting about the gathering or skipping out to go to a party. But as the hours tick by and another night falls with not so much as a text from the students, panic ensues. Soon the campus police call in reinforcements. Search parties are formed. Reporters swarm the small enclave. Rumors swirl and questions arise.
Libby, Blane, Mark, Felix, and Stella―The Five, as the podcasters, bloggers, and TikTok sleuths soon call them―come from very different families. What drew them out on that fateful night? Could it be the sins of their mothers and fathers come to cause them peril―or a threat to the friend group from within?
Told from each family’s point of view―and marking the return of FBI Special Agent Sarah Keller from Every Last Fear and The Night Shift―Parents Weekend explores the weight of expectation, family dysfunction, and those exhilarating first days in the dorms when friends become family.
Parents Weekend Discussion Questions
I believe the best book club questions to spark a lively discussion in your group help readers make personal connections to the story.
You can read about how to write the best book club questions on your own here, but hopefully these will get you started!
Question 1:
Where did you go to college? Did you know students like the ones featured in this book?
Question 2:
Who's story is this? Is Parents Weekend more about the college students or is it about their parents?
Question 3:
How would you rank the sets of parents in terms of Best to Worst? Perhaps start the discussion by deciding which set of parents is the absolute worst and go from there!
Question 4:
Which family plot line did you find the most interesting to read? Was there one family or character you dreaded their turn coming?
Question 5:
Why do you think the author chose Parents Weekend as the special event? Have you participated in a parents weekend as the parent or as the student? How did yours compare?
Question 6:
What was the most shocking revelation from the story for you? Why?
Question 7:
If you could have changed anything about the ending and how the various story lines wrapped up, what would you have done differently?
Book Club Party Menu
I think it is so fun to plan your book club dinner menu or dessert list based on the theme of the book.
There are a few book club dinner-friendly dishes mentioned throughout the story, here are a few I'd choose if I were hosting the party:
Since the book features a bunch of college kids, you could do some flashback favorites from your own college days.
Instead of just plain ramen noodles, perhaps serve my easy ground beef ramen stir fry for dinner!

Alternatively, channel the fresh produce from California and the current season and serve some veggie-forward appetizers for munching.
My easy Mexican street corn dip is perfect for summer and fun to dunk tortilla chips in.

And my light and tangy BLT dip has peppered bacon and tastes great on a buttery cracker.
