I had very high hopes for The Love of My After Life when I picked it to be part of our 2025 book club list. It was one of the few titles I hadn’t already read in advance, but everything about it seemed so promising.

When my bar of expectations is set so high, it can be easy to be disappointed.

As I closed the book on the last page, I was smiling so big and loved it so much, I briefly considered adding it to our 2026 book club list before remembering it was already part of this year’s line-up! (In fact, you can get the book club kit for The Love of My After Life here.)

Summary of The Love of My After Life

A recently deceased woman meets “the one” in the afterlife waiting room, scoring a second chance at life (and love!) if she can find him on earth before ten days are up…

If she wasn’t dead already, Delphie would be dying of embarrassment. Not only did she just die by choking on a microwaveable burger, but now she’s standing in her ‘shine like a star’ nightie in front of the hottest man she’s ever seen. And he’s smiling at her.

As they start to chat, everything else becomes background noise. That is until someone comes running out of a door, yelling something about a huge mistake, and sends the dreamy stranger back down to earth. And here Delphie was thinking her luck might be different in the afterlife.

When Delphie is offered a deal in which she can return to earth and reconnect with the mysterious man, she jumps at the opportunity to find her possible soulmate and a fresh start. But in a city of millions, Delphie is going to have to listen to her heart, learn to ask for help, and perhaps even see the magic in the life she’s leaving behind…

What I Liked

Here’s what I would tell my best friend about the book:

  1. Tribute to Romance: If you’re a fan of the romance genre and enjoy romantic tropes, this book is 100% for you. It is such a sweet tribute to the joys of this particular genre and puts several tropes into action with a wink-wink to the reader.
  2. Good Place Vibes: If you enjoyed the tv series “The Good Place,” this book is for you. The after life is presented as tongue-in-cheek funny and despite the death theme is not a tear jerker in any way.
  3. TONS of Pop Culture References: It was very clear the author is a big fan of romance books, tv shows, and music. She paints a lovely picture of each scene by using pop culture references to add detail. You can see my list of all the books mentioned in The Love of My After Life here. It would make a super fun reading challenge all by itself!
  4. Joyful, Heartwarming, and Inspiring: This could have made an excellent book club pick for January with its message to live life to the fullest. Alas, I picked it for February. Still it was the perfect read for the start of my new year.
  5. One of My Favorite Character Arcs: Watching Delphie’s character grow over the course of the story was one of my favorite parts!
  6. Set in London: Having just spent a week in London with my family, I thoroughly enjoyed all the mentions of the city landmarks. It would be an excellent choice if you’re looking for a read to enjoy on the plane for your next trip to London.

What I Didn’t Like

Every reader needs something different from a book. What I may not have preferred may be your favorite part.

I can’t think of one thing I didn’t love about this book. It kept me coming back for more and I was able to finish it in under 48 hours.

How Spicy Is It?

🌶️🌶️🌶️: The Love of My After Life rates a Level 3 on my spicy books rating scale. Open door romance but there are only a couple scenes and I would argue they are essential to the plot of the story and the growth of the main character.
