Several years ago, we read Caraval as part of our 2017 book club line-up. It was one of my favorites from that year so when I spotted this month’s pick I was intrigued.

The book description said this one was “perfect for fans of Caraval and The Night Circus,” two of my personal favorites.

As we head into the final month of summer, I thought this magical romance would be the perfect transition into fall. If you’re looking for a book to share with your teens, this YA pick would be a fun choice before they head back to school!

P.S. Just joining us? Don’t miss the full 2024 line-up for our book club picks.

    What is Hotel Magnifique About?

“All her life, Jani has dreamed of Elsewhere. Just barely scraping by with her job at a tannery, she’s resigned to a dreary life in the port town of Durc, caring for her younger sister, Zosa. That is, until the Hotel Magnifique comes to town.

The hotel is legendary not only for its whimsical enchantments, but also for its ability to travel—appearing in a different destination every morning. While Jani and Zosa can’t afford the exorbitant costs of a guest’s stay, they can interview to join the staff, and are soon whisked away on the greatest adventure of their lives. But once inside, Jani quickly discovers their contracts are unbreakable and that beneath the marvelous glamour, the hotel is hiding dangerous secrets.

With the vexingly handsome doorman, Bel, as her only ally, Jani embarks on a mission to unravel the mystery of the magic at the heart of the hotel and free Zosa—and the other staff—from the cruelty of the ruthless maître d’hôtel. To succeed, she’ll have to risk everything she loves, but failure would mean a fate far worse than never returning home.”

    Hotel Magnifique Discussion Questions

I believe the best book club questions to spark a lively discussion in your group help readers make personal connections to the story.

You can read about how to write the best book club questions on your own here, but hopefully these will get you started!

    Question 1:

If you had the opportunity to interview for a job in Hotel Magnifique, would you? Would you pay to be a guest in the hotel? Which would you prefer?

    Question 2:

If you were a suminaire, what would your magical power be? What would be your artefact?

    Question 3:

Which character from the story did you find the most intriguing? Would you define them as a hero or a villain?

    Question 4:

If you stood before the moon window of the hotel and saw a single scene that represented “home” to you, what would you see?

    Question 5:

If Alastair designed a hotel room just for you, what would it be like?

    Question 6:

If you had to be a character in the story, which one would you be? Why?

    Question 7:

Was the ending satisfying to you? How might you have changed it?

    Book Club Party Menu

I think it is so fun to plan your book club dinner menu or dessert list based on the theme of the book.

Several easy book club party snacks are mentioned throughout the story.

Serve tea time treats with a pot of tea and Yrsa’s “not milk” for cream. You could pick up little biscuits and cookies at the bakery or try my almond cherry scones recipe:

    Almond Cherry Scones
Almond cherry scones have big plump dried cherries right in the scone itself and a pretty almond glaze drizzled over the top.
