Magical realism is usually the genre of books that most surprises our newest book club members. Everyone loves that the Peanut Blossom Book Club cycles through as many different genres as I can manage over the years and introduces our readers to new favorites.

If you’ve never enjoyed a magical realism book before, you’re in for a treat with The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young. For fans of Sarah Addison Allen’s books like Sugar Queen and Lost Lake, you’ll feel right at home.

What is The Unmaking of June Farrow About?

“In the small mountain town of Jasper, North Carolina, June Farrow is waiting for fate to find her. The Farrow women are known for their thriving flower farm—and the mysterious curse that has plagued their family line. The whole town remembers the madness that led to Susanna Farrow’s disappearance, leaving June to be raised by her grandmother and haunted by rumors.

It’s been a year since June started seeing and hearing things that weren’t there. Faint wind chimes, a voice calling her name, and a mysterious door appearing out of nowhere—the signs of what June always knew was coming. But June is determined to end the curse once and for all, even if she must sacrifice finding love and having a family of her own.

After her grandmother’s death, June discovers a series of cryptic clues regarding her mother’s decades-old disappearance, except they only lead to more questions. But could the door she once assumed was a hallucination be the answer she’s been searching for? The next time it appears, June realizes she can touch it and walk past the threshold. And when she does, she embarks on a journey that will not only change both the past and the future, but also uncover the lingering mysteries of her small town and entangle her heart in an epic star-crossed love.”

The Unmaking of June Farrow Discussion Questions

I believe the best book club questions to spark a lively discussion in your group help readers make personal connections to the story.

You can read about how to write the best book club questions on your own here, but hopefully these will get you started!

    Question 1:

How would you categorize this book: Is it a time travel book or is it magical realism? There are elements of both, but if you had to pick one or the other, what would you say?

    Question 2:

If you could walk through a door that would take you to another time, where would you go? Or would you choose to skip your chance?

    Question 3:

Who do you think June matched better with, Eamon or Mason? Did you feel satisfied with how their relationships played out?

    Question 4:

The women in June’s family made great sacrifices for the next generations. How far would you go for your future grandchildren or great grandchildren?

    Question 5:

How did you feel about Caleb once you knew his full childhood story?

    Question 6:

Which life did you want June to pick: Her 1951 life or her 2023 life? Why?

    Book Club Party Menu

I think it is so fun to plan your book club dinner menu or dessert list based on the theme of the book.

There are a few book club dinner-friendly dishes mentioned throughout the story, here are a few I’d choose if I were hosting the party:

Blueberry pie would be an obvious choice for your book club party but if you don’t enjoy making pie crust like me, you’ll love how easy my old fashioned blueberry cobbler is instead.

If you want to keep to a classic North Carolina / Southern theme for your dinner party, keep a crockpot of prepared pulled pork warm on the counter and let your friends fix up a bbq plate or sandwich with a drizzle of this light barbecue sauce over the top.

Pulled Pork in the Oven or Slow Cooker

The easiest bbq side dish is this make-ahead Southern macaroni salad since it can be served cold. If that doesn’t strike your fancy, you could check out these other traditional Southern recipes or pick one of my easy Kentucky Derby appetizers for more nibbles.

    Southern Macaroni Salad
Southern macaroni salad is a popular side dish that you can make ahead and bring along when you’re assigned a dish to pass.
