Finlay Donovan is Killing It Book Club Kit
Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano is the official May 2024 pick for the Peanut Blossom Book Club for Recovering Readers.
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, I love to pick book club books for May that feature a mom as a main character.
When I read Finlay Donovan’s story I knew this just had to be our 2024 pick.
Mom’s will do just about anything for their kids . . . including murder?? Maybe!
I hope you enjoy this fun twist on the motherhood theme for the month.
P.S. Just joining us? Don’t miss the full 2024 line-up for our book club picks.

What is Finlay Donovan About?
“Finlay Donovan is killing it . . . except, she’s really not. She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors.
When Finlay is overheard discussing the plot of her new suspense novel with her agent over lunch, she’s mistaken for a contract killer, and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet . . . Soon, Finlay discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation.”
Finlay Donovan is Killing It Discussion Questions
I believe the best book club questions to spark a lively discussion in your group help readers make personal connections to the story.
You can read about how to write the best book club questions on your own here, but hopefully these will get you started!
Question 1:
Do you enjoy crime/murder investigation stories? How does this one compare to others you’ve read? If it is your first time reading this genre, did you enjoy it enough to try another?
Question 2:
What would you have done if Patricia Mickler dropped her note into your purse??
Question 3:
Vero becomes Finlay’s “partner in crime” and is there for her through thick and thin. Who would you call on when it comes time to “bury the bodies”?
Question 4:
Does being a mother change Finlay’s choices throughout the novel? How would this story have been different if she didn’t have kids?
Question 5:
If you had your pick of Julian vs. Nick, which of these romantic interests would you choose?
Question 6:
The novel ends on a shocking note. Would you read Book 2 in the series?
Book Club Party Menu
I think it is so fun to plan your book club dinner menu or dessert list based on the theme of the book.
There are a few book club dinner-friendly dishes mentioned throughout the story, here are a few I’d choose if I were hosting the party:
Peanut Blossom Book Club member Denae shared her book club party menu in our Facebook group.
When she got together with her mom friends, they served:
- Panera Pastries
- Vero’s Oreos
- Diaper Bag Cheerios
- Stakeout Snacks: Chips, candy and other munchies
I absolutely love how quick and easy this party spread would be to pull together. Thank you so much for sharing with us, Denae!
