Every November I try to pick a book club book about family and food, something cozy as we lead into the holiday season.

A romantic time travel story that features our heroes falling in love in the kitchen?? Sounded like a perfect pick for this year's line-up!

"He always says food brings people together, and that's really what I love about it." This sweet story is the perfect read to enjoy as you plan your own menus and bring your own people together.

What is The Seven Year Slip About?

Sometimes, the worst day of your life happens, and you have to figure out how to live after it.

So Clementine forms a plan to keep her heart safe: work hard, find someone decent to love, and try to remember to chase the moon. The last one is silly and obviously metaphorical, but her aunt always told her that you needed at least one big dream to keep going. And for the last year, that plan has gone off without a hitch. Mostly. The love part is hard because she doesn’t want to get too close to anyone—she isn’t sure her heart can take it.

And then she finds a strange man standing in the kitchen of her late aunt’s apartment. A man with kind eyes and a Southern drawl and a taste for lemon pies. The kind of man that, before it all, she would’ve fallen head-over-heels for. And she might again.

Except, he exists in the past. Seven years ago, to be exact. And she, quite literally, lives seven years in his future.

Her aunt always said the apartment was a pinch in time, a place where moments blended together like watercolors. And Clementine knows that if she lets her heart fall, she’ll be doomed.

After all, love is never a matter of time—but a matter of timing.

The Seven Year Slip Discussion Questions

I believe the best book club questions to spark a lively discussion in your group help readers make personal connections to the story.

You can read about how to write the best book club questions on your own here, but hopefully these will get you started!

    Question 1:

Clementine's apartment can travel into the future or the past but only by 7 years. If you could travel 7 years forward or back, which way would you go? Why?

    Question 2:

Iwan and Clementine discuss what makes "the perfect meal." What would YOUR perfect meal be?

    Question 3:

James' crowning achievement is his restaurant but Clementine accuses him of not being true to himself. Which would be more accurate for him -- a 3 star Michelin restaurant or a local dive joint? Which one would you enjoy eating at more?

    Question 4:

Clementine's aunt whisks her away on travel adventures where they bond and experience both up and downs but she doesn't share the downs with her parents. What do you often remember most about your own travels -- the good or the bad or both?

    Question 5:

Clementine's passport is loaded with stamps, how many does your passport have? Where would you want to get it stamped next?

    Question 6:

Which version of Iwan would you be more attracted to? Why?

    Question 7:

"It's never a matter of time, but a matter of timing." Has this quote applied to you at some point? Tell us about it.

    Question 8:

Clementine has a career change at the end of the book. Have you ever thought about doing something completely different? What do you dream of doing?

    Book Club Party Menu

I think it is so fun to plan your book club dinner menu or dessert list based on the theme of the book.

Since Iwan is a total foodie and his love for feeding his favorite people is a special part of this story, the obvious choice for your book club snacks would be to take cues from two foods that are featured in a very romantic scene:

    North Carolina Lemon Pie

The most perfect choice, even if you cook nothing else for the party, would be to make Iwan's essential lemon pie.

"In this recipe, I substitute meringue with whipped cream. It's a twist on key lime, with lemons obviously, with a graham-cracker crust. Simple, really."

I made a version that is extremely close to his description but uses a saltine cracker pie crust for a fun twist. This North Carolina lemon pie is definitely a winning recipe for the center of your book club table.

    Takeout Pizza

Keep things super easy and on par with the swooniest scene from the book and just order takeout pizza in a cardboard box!

Can't bring yourself to do delivery? You could make my easy homemade cheese pizza or top it with your favorite toppings.
