When I flew through the A Court of Thorns and Roses series a few summers ago, I realized that I’m a big fan of the romantasy books genre.

I was prepped and ready to enjoy Fourth Wing that first summer it was released. It seemed everyone was talking about it and I was heading out on a beach vacation so the timing worked.

What I didn’t expect was to be spending 7 hours floating in a pool absolutely hooked onto my Kindle.

This book has been around a while. In fact Book 2, Iron Flame, is already out and Book 3, Onyx Storm, is coming in January ’25. So you may wonder why I’m reviewing Fourth Wing now.

The answer is, this book was everything I want in a summer read and it deserved a spot in my book review library even if I’m behind the curve!

Curious if this book is for you? Check out my full review below.

Summary of Fourth Wing

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general―also known as her tough-as-talons mother―has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away…because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter―like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda―because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

What I Liked

Here’s what I would tell my best friend about the book, no spoilers!:

  1. Awesome World Building: I loved the grown-up Harry Potter vibes. A war college with dragon riding? Yes, please.
  2. The Tenacious Violet Sorrengail: Watching Violet push through every last one of her challenges to become an elite dragon rider was inspiring. Violet has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a chronic condition shared by author Yarros. I loved how this story showed her overcoming this obstacle and thriving. Her strength is so much more than physical and I loved her connection with the dragons.
  3. The Supporting Cast: When a story is set in a school, there’s a great opportunity for a strong cast of secondary characters. There were several sub-plots I enjoyed reading about just as much as Violet’s story.

What I Didn’t Like

Every reader needs something different from a book. What I may not have preferred may be your favorite part.

The first 100 pages were a little slower for me than I would hope but they were enough to keep me going. I read the next 400 pages in less time than those first 100 took. Worth it.

How Spicy Is It?

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️: Fourth Wing rates a Level 4 on my spicy books rating scale. Descriptive and intense open door romantic scenes mixed between action-packed scenes of violence and adventure.

Overall Score

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I give Fourth Wing 5 stars, when I can’t put down a 528 page novel and I finish it in 24 hours, it has more than earned that 5 star rating!
